Parents wanted to talk about how to teach kids good manners, like saying "please/thank you" and speaking when spoken to. Various suggestions were offered, including:
· Role play scenarios (e.g. at a birthday party, practice what the child can say when he or she receives a gift they don't really like)
· Prepare the child in advance for the scenario to come, and let them know what is expected of them (e.g. telling your son he will see Principal Elliot in a few minutes and to be prepared to say "good morning" and look him in the eye).
· Create a good behavior chart
· Give consequences; make a point by raising your voice if need be; count down.
There was discussion about remembering the kids are little adults and as such should be treated with respect, but must also be held accountable for what is expected of them.
The group talked about trying to relax yourself (parent) before speaking, avoiding frustration with repeating the same reminder over and over.
